suggestions for rules and guidelines

Postby Cooley » Sun Aug 27, 2006 11:43 pm

OK I'll try (with your help, and Curm's okey-dokey) to come up with some rules and "ettiquite guidelines" for posting here.

I like to cuss like a sailor, so that's not gonna be a problem.

Obviously, anything that my vast experience watching Law & Order tells me is libelous (haha, like I know what that means) is gonna get deleted.

Basically, what I want from the rules is:
- nobody gets so offensive/offended that it starts to drive posters away
- nobody threatens anybody's "real" stuff; body, money, job, family, etc
- nobody gets sued, or gets a letter from a lawyer
- nobody who doesn't want their identity "outed" is outed

I'll also reserve the right to "lock" any thread that I've decided has become a useless flame war (after it stops being fun, anyway). Try not to get all pissed off if that happens to you. Wait til it happens to somebody else, then it'll be funny (I promise).

As moderator, I'll do my best not to get involved in the flaming but that doesn't mean that I'll never suggest your mother was not married.

I have a pretty high bar for "offensive" so please let me know by Private Message if you're deeply offended about something.

Let me repeat, I reserve the right to lock any thread I damn well please. That said, I'll always have a reason for why I did so. Absolutely everyone should feel completely free to PM me and bitch if you think I was unfair.

I'll be far less likely to delete a thread or ban a poster; that will only be done upon discussion with Curm and only when necessary.

I hope you folks feel like you can trust me to be a fair moderator. Again, if you feel I've wronged you please let me know.

OK, now on to posting "guidelines", more suggestions please.

Some thoughts I've had:

- if your post contains or links to something some posters may not like to see or that is generally accepted as 'offensive' (boobs, graphic violence, NY Yankees, etc) maybe we should write "R-Rated" in the subject line.

I prefer "NSFW", but not everybody would know what it means (Not Safe For Work, for the uninitiated). That's why I suggest "R-Rated"; we all know what that means.

Please note the ads on sites you link to; keep in mind that some humor sites and such have ads with naked women in them.

- If your post contains or links to something that would put a hurtin' on our 56k dial-up-using friends (large pics, movies, etc), I think we should write "No 56k" or something in the subject line.

- Don't post pictures larger than 800x600 unless you absolutely have to.

Thoughts? Additions?

Rule 4. ;)

As a courtesy to other web sites, I would say that people have to either get permission to remote-link an image or host it himself/herself.

Your list looks good.

In all seriousness, what about my potty mouth? It's my drug of choice.

I've got no problem with "colorful" language, Gregg; already discussed it with Curm, he doesn't either. You know how I talk. :D

I have seen so mention of "shot after X amount of posts" etc., was that not a rule before?

I like to think I'm pretty laid-back as well.

I'm also easily swayed by free alcohol.

I'd like to see all stories/content pulled from other websites properly attributed with a link.

When it comes right down to it, when stories are freely available on the web I don't see the need to post the whole story when just a teaser (first few paragraphs) and a link will do.

That just one man's opinion, though.

I usually only post the whole thing from the HT cause they are all about the $$$$$$$ and some people just don't want to give it to them.

I enjoy a few paragraphs., too I hate to see links with no clue as to what's there.

Just my opinion.

I'll second that. There's a certain poster that roams several other forums I frequent, and he has the nasty habit of posting a vague subject line and just a link. I've trained myself not to click on the links anymore.
