Cool Finds

Postby mysteryguest » Sat Oct 08, 2011 2:47 pm

Have you ever found cool deals or unique items at a garage sale, auction, etc.?
We stopped at a few sales today and I got a couple of fun(well, to me anyway) items.
I paid $1 for this hip framed poster! The Rat Pack, looking cool and they know it. Why was Sammy's name in red on the sign?

This is a complete mahjong set in a very cool wood case, thank god it came with directions! $10

I found a great rat pack poster years ago that I gave to a friend who is a HUGE fan. If yours ever needs a home, I know where to send it! Nice finds!

My wife is also the master of the great finds. It's all dumb luck sometimes.
The Duck was here.

Mysteryguest Got a date anywhere on that Cardinal Mah-Jongg directions pamphlet or anywhere? I think they stopped making those in the 70's. I saw one of their vintage "quality" sets sell for over $900 but I think they made a range in varying quality sets over the years.

Looks like a very nice set. Hope you learn how to play. Once upon a time I wanted to learn but never tried. I must have known some people who played. I forget the circumstances now.

I will have to check the direc tions a little more closely to find a date. The tiles look to be Catalin rather than Bakelite. Catalin was similar to Bakelite but does not to get as much of a yellowish brown tint with age. To identify them, you test the same way. Catalin tiles' corners are a little more rounded because of the molding process. I am pretty sure they are not ivory or bone. But as I said, I need to examine it a little more closely, they may be celluloid. The box, a double doored table top style, is is very good condition with no nicks or damage. Internally, all of the dividers are in place and not damaged or loose, The four wood racks are in great shape, also undamaged. The coins all appear to be in good shape.
Definitely worth the $10 I paid!

Can't really tell by photo here but tiles seem too white to be either bakelite or catalin. Don't see any pores like bone, or patterns like ivory. My guess vinyl plastic, or laminated wood, but it could be white jade! Wouldn't that be a humdinger!

Nah - not laminated wood on 2nd thought.

I don't remember ever seeing a double doored box. Sounds very unique.
