New Rules Discussion - Preface

Postby Curmudgeon » Fri Feb 24, 2012 9:27 am

Ok, we're going to start posting various rules that are being updated here for comments and discussion.

Please keep comments succinct and regarding the rule(s) under consideration. There will be a number of threads, they are not going to be created in any particular order.

I will heavily moderate these discussions for commentary outside of the subject at hand.

User Responsibilities - see next post

Member Responsibility:
Members should always strive to practice positive attributes:
> Read carefully and post entertainingly, informatively, and economically.
> Acknowledge other people, assume good will, be quick to praise and slow to criticize, add knowledge, offer help, be slow to anger, apologize when wrong, politely ask for clarification, and exercise patience when your temper flares.
> Welcome new people. Point newcomers to these rules, links to related conversations.
> Bring your situation to the moderators if you are angry, puzzled, or otherwise uncertain about what to do.

Ok, the idea here is to:

Hey good job but....

...this rule, yeah it's a bad idea because....

...good start, I think you ought to consider something...

...I think if you changed the wording to this it'd serve you better...

...etc...

/me channeling Johnny5...need input...

Curm, reads good to me.

My irritation, and I know of no way to regulate it, is use of the "quote" function. I guess "overuse" is more apt. I think it can really clutter up the thread and get tedious to scroll through.

So, if I may, "Please, pretty-please, posters don't use the quote function unless it would be confusing not to. And, as an aside, you can edit the quote down to the relevant part you are responding to."

Thanks. I feel better. :)

Sorry to quote you but I wanted to make a suggestion in regards to your post. :D
How about those who feel the need to quote a large post or a post that already has multiple quotes use the "spoiler" function to hide it? Maybe we could add another "spoiler" function but rename it "Long ass quote"?

I like the way you think, MG.

That's a pretty cool suggestion, and would be really helpful.

Well if I decide to get real productive I could always create a "How To..." section for doing different thing and show how to edit those multi-quotes for people that find it intimidating.

...or stick it on the new kid admin... ;)

I like for folks to just stick up and graphic/pic with the img tags so I can steal it and post it at some of the other forums I hang at.

Now I have to save it to my photobucket account then post it.... such a bother.

---

OK... back to the topic.

Thanks for your comments so far.

I'll introduce each rule under it's own thread much like this.

Coming are rules on Spam, Stalking/Outting, Copyright/Intellectual Property/Piracy, and more.

I like the idea of a "directions for dummies" section. Personally, I feel like a dumbie everytime I try to cut down the quotes because I don't like they clustered look the produce either. I just don't really have a good grasp on how to edit them properly.

Proper use of the quotation function should be a defined member responsibility, too. I'm in total agreement on that point: Quoting an entire post that may have 3-5 quotes in it itself is nonsensical... this is a smallish board, "Whole post quoting" is just plain rude. You almost certainly aren't responding to the totality of the post, but rather to some portion of it. A good poster will slice the quote down to just the passage, paragraph, or sentence(s) they're actually responding to.

Don't forget to stick in the "<snip>"... :chuckle:

But seriously- My limited experience on forums suggests that any voluntary 'rule' will be promptly ignored.

I agree...but this is not always so easy from an iPad or an iPhone...
"The rational man must sacrifice himself to the irrational, the independent man to the parasites, the honest man to the dishonest, the man of justice to the unjust, the productive man to the thieving loafers, the man of integrity to the compromising knaves, the man of self-esteem to the sniveling neurotics" - John Gault

I'll take your word for that as I own neither. What I understand from your post is that if someone is using an iPhone or iPad, courtesy when posting takes a back seat to expediency. Life in a polite society is seldom easy.

Not so much courtesy, but there are some things I have found that I cannot do on these devices. For example, selecting a block of text and changing the font color.... Could be user error....I will work on it....

Back when I wuz repairing/troubleshooting electronics and equipment I used to call that "Operator Headspace". :giggle:

"If all else fails, read the directions"

(done being snarky- apologies up front)

But seriously- I just spent a half-hour or more learning the new (to me) car radio functions. I'll probably not use 90% of the built-in bells and whistles.
