New Forum Wish List

Postby Curmudgeon » Wed Jan 04, 2012 12:09 pm

Ok, what would you like to see added/removed, done with a new forum?

THIS WILL BE A MODERATED THREAD SAVE THE BULLSHIT.

Be succinct but give enough information that conveys any idea you care to share.

Again, no discussion outside of the aim of improving the forum. I will edit any and all post that strays outside that line in this thread.

There are 2 that I've asked for.

Ignore - ignore feature will make it so you don't see any post or thread created by someone in your ignore list, nor will you see any type of marker indicating you've missed a post or thread by them. Unless another users quotes them it will be as though they do not exist for you.

pictures/graphics - when you post a picture that is large it automatically will be parsed to make it viewable w/o breaking the forum borders with the ability to click on it and see the full size image.

Just as a fyi, we intend to bring all the threads/posts here across to the new forum as well.

All sub-forums are located under each major forum title.

Time and usage will take care of that, or you can ask on here or through PM.

I'm on a forum where we only have one forum. Just one big list of topics.

It sounds like it would be messy but it has worked quite well for a number of years. I think it is set to list 50 or 60 topics per page so the recent conversations almost always are on the front page no matter how active.

We may be able to provide something like that in a custom skin, but I will have to check the documentation. One thing I've always wanted to be able to do is let the users decide which forums they want to see in the active/recent topics list.

If there is a feature in another forum that you would like to see, describe the feature and post a link to the forum (either here or in a PM to me) and we'll see what we can do. Don't share your username on that forum with us (unless you really want to.)

 no it certainly isn't.

...and for general knowledge the new forum software is called vBulletin 4.0 Publishing Suite.

Again it'll likely be several months before we move. There are a lot of things to be done and we're all volunteers here so it'll get done in its own time. Father Wrath and MysteryGuest have their work cut out for them.

We intend to move all forums/threads and post to the new system.

It'll provide better security against hackers, an upgraded user registration to cut down even further on spambots and the like built-in.

It would be nice if when you went to read a thread that it automatically positioned you to where you last left the thread (this was something Pluck actually did quite well).....
"The rational man must sacrifice himself to the irrational, the independent man to the parasites, the honest man to the dishonest, the man of justice to the unjust, the productive man to the thieving loafers, the man of integrity to the compromising knaves, the man of self-esteem to the sniveling neurotics" - John Gault

Indeed, I forgot this on my list but I had asked FW if it were possible to do here on phpBB and we will be looking at this for implementation on the new system as well. It was one of the few very nice features pluck had.

Not sure if it is browser dependent or skin or cookie settings or what, but this happens for me. I just clicked on some threads I haven't read in awhile and it took me to where I was last.

There's kind of a trick to that (and you have to be logged in for it to work.)

If you click on the icon just to the left of the subject => Image

it will take you to the first post in the thread.

If you click on the subject title itself, it should take you to where you left off.

If you click on the icon just to the right of the poster's name => Image

it should take you to the very latest post in a thread, regardless of where you were before.

vBulletin 4.0 Publishing Suite.

How bout an insert link button that allows one to automatically create a link like you did above simply by highlighting the words that you want to become the link, clicking the insert hyperlink button, and pasting the url within a pop up?

I mean sure, I could click the URL button, then put an = and copy the link but that seems more complex, even if it really isn't.

I you use firefox there is a handy Addon called BBCode that allows you to do cool stuff with a right click menu.

Oh that could be handy, too bad we can't do any of those as admin! :P
