Wayman Tisdale loses part of leg to cancer

Postby Father Wrath » Wed Aug 27, 2008 8:45 am

Wow, bummer. Former Indiana Pacer and member of the Bob Knight-coached Olympic basketball team that won the gold in Los Angeles in 1984, Wayman Tisdale had part of his right leg amputated Monday because of bone cancer.

Tisdale was never able to duplicate his stellar college basketball career in the NBA, but he was a very solid player, and from all accounts, a very likable guy. Best regards to him.

That is sad news but hopefully he can recover from it. I've always heard he is a nice guy. A friend of mine saw him and met him at the Destin Jazzfest a few years ago, said he was pretty good.
There are classic Bob Knight 1984 Olympic stories involving Wayman who was apparently the designated chew toy for Knight at the time.
I also remember Bobby "Slick" Leonard calling Pacers games back in the day and having him shout "Take it to the hole Wayman! Oh man, I could go for a Priazzo and that Tisdale basket is brought to you by Pizza Hut..."
This is the kind of thing that I think, frankly, separates the men from the boys in leadership. Do you have the testicular virility to make a decision like that, knowing what's coming your way.
